so yhea. a few weeks agao i posted a list of my all time favorite records on my myspace. and since everyone is posting lists of their favorite records of the decade i decided to post one myself based on my all time list.
no big thing, just a little teaser to help you until the rundown of 2009 (which i am working on, it's coming in a few days)
since there's no big surprises in this list for the people who've read the all time list, i decided to write a quick capture for each of the records to keep it interesting for everyone.
ehrm, so yhea, here goes.
01. the Murder City Devils - In Name and Blood [2000]
music to smash a bar into pieces and drive your getaway car off a cliff.
02. Carissa's Wierd - You Should Be at Home Here [2001]
rarely ever did deep deep depression sound so incredibly beautiful.
03. Sun Kil Moon - Tiny Cities [2004]
mark kozelek can sing anything to me and i'll love it.
04. Low - Things We Lost in the Fire [2001]
low expanded their sound just a bit and ended up with their best record.
05. Bon Iver - For Emma, Forever Ago [2008]
detached and out of this world silent folk music.
06. the Jim Yoshii Pile-Up - Homemade Drugs [2002]
helpless and bitter insight about a cold world put to elegantly woven but subtle music.
07. Alps of New South Wales - self-titled [2007]
fact: when even suicide doesn't feel like a way out anymore, this is still here and it still feels real.
08. Naked Lunch - Songs for the Exhausted [2004]
a record of loss of love and perspective that's as uplifting as it is crushing.
09. Modest Mouse - Good News for People Who Love Bad News [2004]
while it has lost a little of its shine, their pop record is still a very enjoyable listen.
10. Blacklisted - No One Deserves to Be Here More Than Me [2009]
or replace it with "Heavier than Heaven...", i don't care.
11. Off With Their Heads - Hospital [2006]
music to smash a bar into pieces and drive your getaway car off a cliff again.
12. Arab Strap - the Red Thread [2001]
before they got loud, they were at their best. singing songs about depression, sex, depression because of lack of sex and depression because of sex and being drunk.
13. Hood - Cold House [2001]
lo-fi and post-everything band decides to incorporate electronics and wins.
14. Oma Hans - Bremen/Zürich/Karlsruhe 10" [2002]
the sound conveys ultimate desperation (think wipers) and the lyricist is a madman.
15. Songs: Ohia - Didn't It Rain [2002]
before molina wanted to be conor oberst he wrote some bleak fucking records.
16. the Weakerthans - Reunion Tour [2007]
very laid-back, their latest lp is their most intelligent.
17. the Notwist - Neon Golden [2002]
before "Funeral" this was the indie darling record of the decade. both are good.
18. The Pine - self-titled [2001]
pain music with loud guitars and wailing vocals.
19. British Sea Power - The Decline of British Sea Power [2002]
grandiose, driven, energtic, excentric and highly dancable.
20. Tom Liwa - St. Amour [2000]
there's no way to explain him. he just writes perfect wuss records.
21. Casiotone for the Painfully Alone - Twinkle Echo [2003]
owen ashworth changed music by making every lonely student able to pick up a casio and just run with it. he did it first and (second) best.
22. Interpol - Turn On the Bright Lights [2002]
an incredibly sexy pop record using 80s post-punk influences. made all the shy indie kids wanna wear suits.
23. Rob & the Pinhole Stars - Greyskysmile [2003]
gentle, fragile songs with very tender lyricsism. very underrated and overlooked.
24. Turner - Slow Abuse [2006]
depression music made by a house dj who discovered elliott smith.
25. EA80 - Alle Ziele [2001]
reaching a new peak late with a diverse record mixing neckbreakers and slower moments.
so that's about it.
the picture is from the silfestival appendix 2003. shit, we have come a longway since then.
which reminds me. come to the SILFESTIVAL 09/01/10 and get your head kicked in by THE STRIGGLES
and check out the wonderful flyer i made.
